Laura James

Laura has been an archaeologist since 2003. She first worked in the East Anglian Fens and the Norfolk Broads, where many of Headland’s fieldwork projects have also been based in recent years. During her career, she spent 17 years working in the field in a variety of roles and developed a particular specialism in waterlogged wood recording.

During lockdown, she completed a research Master's degree, looking at the development of fieldwork recording systems used in British archaeology, at the University of Winchester.

Laura has worked on many large-scale landscape projects for several companies, and her understanding of the principles and practices of British archaeology is thorough and detailed. Her time at Headland began in 2021, at first in fieldwork and, more recently, within the Post-Excavation Section. She was recently promoted to Senior Post-Excavation Officer in the Research and Reporting Department, where she helps write the stories of Headland’s sites using the information generated by fieldwork teams and specialist analyses. In her spare time, Laura enjoys working with members of the public as well as students, teaching them about what archaeologists do. This has taken her abroad, notably to Georgia for AGEN, founded in 2001, where she teaches international students.
